About Us

Coding for Healthcare Professionals is offered by Claudia Tessier, RHIA, MEd, who is convinced that the coding profession is a viable career path for healthcare professionals. Thus, this program is directed to experienced healthcare professionals who have a strong background in anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, laboratory and other diagnostic procedures, disease processes, surgery, the healthcare record’s content and organization, documented related regulations and requirements, etc.

Claudia Tessier

Claudia Tessier, RHIA, MEd

Claudia is a widely recognized authority and speaker on healthcare documentation, electronic medical records, ICD coding, including CAC (computer-assisted coding), and mHealth, as well as related health informatics standards. From 1984 to 2001, she was CEO of AAMT, the American Association for Medical Transcription (now, AHDI), where she was instrumental in growing its membership and component associations. She directed its education and certification programs, authored the first edition of its Style Guide for Medical Transcription, and represented the association in the domestic and international healthcare informatics and standards development community.

Claudia first studied coding while enrolled in the US Public Health Service medical records administration (MRA) program. After achieving her RRA designation (registered records administrator, now RHIA, registered healthcare information administrator), she earned an MEd (Master of Education) degree in the Allied Health Education program at the University of Houston. She taught coding and other topics in the MRA programs at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. More recently, Claudia has served as US manager of an international firm (ID Information and Documentation in Healthcare) with more than 10 years experience in coding systems that is introducing its ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS software into the US. Claudia is also known for authoring The Surgical Word Book (Elsevier). She serves as advisor for those enrolled in Coding for Healthcare Professionals.
